celebrate writing

From time to time Kelly at TLL sends out these mass emails to the folks on her blogroll about things going on with the site, or possible writing opportunities. It’s a really good idea for those of you that are serious about writing to submit something there every so often just as a way to network. Especiallly if you see the majority of your work aimed at the gay community…

Anyway, Kelly sends an email about a week and a half or so ago about an opportunity to contribute to Project Q Atlanta. The site is awesome. It follows current events geared toward the LGBT community and even more specific to those local to Atlanta. I jumped on the email and contacted Matt who deemed my writing worthy! Just waiting to see what my next step is and I’ll be on my way…

Kelly sent another email yesterday announcing her plans to make some changes and add new features. She was looking for suggestions. I pitched her a storyline like Kissin Peaches. A written lesbian soap opera. Kelly responded, “I think this is one of the best ideas I have heard!!!” Yay, yay, yay! It will be a weekly feature as soon as I’m ready to run with it.

I really got into writing in the 6th grade. I had an English teacher that made us keep a journal. We’d write an entry once a week. It at least had to be a page long. It was never graded on content, grammar or spelling. She just wanted us to get used to writing. We did so much writing that year. I think it was because of her that I started to really enjoy writing. I learned so much from her. Seriously, you know how you have teachers that you can look back on and know that you were influenced by? She was one of those kinds of teachers. The odd thing is that she taught my mom and one of my aunt’s too. My aunt is now an English teacher herself. Thanks, Martha Thomas!

Congratulations! That is spectaular news. I do see your passion for writing and it’s wonderful when you get to share that gift in different venues. Unfortunately, writing isn’t one of my gifts. I’m so-so.

I thought math was my gift because I had much influence from my teachers, especially one from middle school. She even included me to be on our schools math competition team and I was the only female. Talk about a confidence booster. That led me to succeeding in high school and getting a math scholarship for college. Though I didn’t graduate with that math degree as originally planned, I still know that if I were to return to that field, I could excel.

It’s great that you are utilizing your talents daily and that people like myself can see your works. I am in much awe. Again, congrats and I can’t wait to read the soap opera.

Thanks…I was good at math too, just hated doing it. And luckily journalism majors got to take an applied math class, lol

I’ve always been envious of those who had inspirational teachers! I never had that, only the one with whom I fell in love for the first time and have kept in touch all these 40 years, but that wasn’t so much about the teaching!

Great news for you! Haven’t clicked the link yet, but I will, even though you know how it will torture me!

    • Alix Mar 1, 2009 at 12:17 am

lol, it will be torture! didn’t think about it like that…

Congrats! And the written soap sounds fun! Reminds me off when my friends and I would pass around a piece of paper and each write a few lines of a juicy, usually sex-driven, story (we were such perverted 12 year olds!)

I also started writing b/c my teacher made me do a journal! She was by far the best teacher ever. She also made us keep nutrition diaries! I tried finding her a few months ago but no luck. Think I might try again!

    • Alix Mar 1, 2009 at 12:28 am

I remember doing that too! And gettin mad cuz someone messed up the story…

CONGRATS ALIX!!! :-) :-) :-) I’m excited for you. I can’t wait to check out your work. You do have a great way with telling stories!

Excellent, looking forward to reading that.

I’ve been really blessed to have some amazing and influential teachers in my life too. I started out as a History major because I had an AP History teacher who was completely brilliant and really helped me with the mental part of applying to competitive colleges. I loved her.

I’ve always used writing as an outlet, but it’s really been a therapeutic part of my coming out process. It’s amusing too, because once that door opened, most of my screenwriting became infused with that part of my life.

Teachers have a major impact on us. I hate that we don’t acknowledge how imporant they really are.

History major? Where were you when I was in high school?
